The Comenius University was established in 1919. The beginnings of undergraduate training of medical students in Martin date as far back as 1962 when a detached working place of the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University in Bratislava was set up in the area of the Martin hospital – a renowned centre of postgraduate training for doctors.
In 1991, our Faculty, as the first medical faculty in Slovakia, opened enrolment to international students. For these students, General Medicine education is provided in English language or they can also join Slovak language program.
Over the last 30 years there were more than 4,000 graduates not only from Slovakia but also from about 30 countries of Europe, Africa, Asia and America.

The Faculty provides courses in a General Medicine Program (6 years) and in a Nursing (3 or 5 years resp.). Graduates in General Medicine receive the degree MUDr. (Doctor of Medicine) and graduates in Nursing Bc. (Bachelor) or Mgr.
(Magister) corresponding to Master’s Degree. The academic staff includes 171 full-time teachers. The teaching staff encompasses also part-time professors, researchers, experienced physicians and general practitioners as well. At present there are more than 1,100
undergraduate full-time students studying at the faculty, about 120 of them came from twenty nine other countries.

The faculty has its own Student hostel with a capacity of more than 1,000 beds. The Library and the Study – Information Center is located at the Student hostel. The Library also provides The Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University, Martin, has both scientific and
study literature for international students. Students have free access to the Internet at both the Faculty and the Student hostel.

Clinical instruction for our students takes place in Martin University Hospital with about 1,000 beds and staff of 2,200 of which about 300 are physicians.

The Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Martin, is also associated with leading health institutions in the world, e.g. the World Health Organization, Association for Medical Education in Europe
(AMEE), Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE), Medical Education and Didactics Network MED-NET.

Martin and its Surroundings
With a population up to 70,000 the central Slovakian town of Martin is situated in the wellknown picturesque „Turiec Garden” wreathed by the Vel'ká and Malá Fatra mountains. The town lies in picturesque surroundings offering its visitors excellent possibilities for walking and hiking in summer and skiing in winter. Martin is an important recreational center with one of the most significant ski centers in Slovakia. Martin is the seat of large engineering plants, it has one of the largest printing complexes in the world, paper, shoe and furniture industries, and a newly-erected Volkswagen factory.
